Why? The simplest planned gift is a legacy made through a will or a bequest. Gifts from estates can be either a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the estate. In many cases, gifts from estates are more sizable than annual gifts and actually can create permanent endowment funds, where the principal is held in perpetuity and annual distributions are made from the fund to carry on the work of the Department. Your gift may be unrestricted and used in the area of greatest need or you may specify a particular purpose.
How? For an unrestricted gift, it is as easy as inserting a provision in your will that says: “I hereby give, devise and bequeath to the University of Wisconsin Foundation for the benefit of the Department of Geoscience the sum of $_____ or _____% of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate.”
What: Trusts and Annuities
Why? There are opportunities that allow you to set aside principal now, retain an income for yourself and/or others, save capital gains tax and still get a charitable deduction now for a portion of your gift. These are called “life income plans” and include Charitable Remainder Trusts, Gift Annuities and Pooled Income Funds. The income is paid for a predetermined number of years for the lifetime of the individual(s). At the time designated, the UW Foundation uses funds remaining in the trust as you specify to benefit the University.
How? All of these options are available through the University of Wisconsin Foundation and are customized to your financial situation and charitable objectives. These planned giving options include some tax planning and financial analysis. It starts, however, with simply wanting to support the work of the Department of Geoscience and then choosing to support it in a way that is smart for you and for the Department.
The UW Foundation Planned Giving Specialists respect your individual goals and circumstances and welcome your questions. We will work with you, your family and your legal or financial representative to prepare your planned gift. This confidential service is provided without obligation.
