Carbonate Sedimentology

RESEARCH

Depositional facies, stratigraphy, and diagenesis of carbonate successions as they relate to petroleum reservoirs have been the main topics of research during my years in the petroleum industry. During that time, I was fortunate to work on a wide variety of carbonate systems, ranging from Cambrian to recent, in many basins, including:

Africa: offshore West African subsalt; Libya (Sirt basin); Morocco

Australasia: Australia (Carnarvon basin); Papua New Guinea

Caribbean: Bahamas; Cuba

Europe: France (Aquitaine, Paris basins); Italy (Adriatic); North Sea

Former Soviet Union: Black Sea; Timan Pechora basin

India: Cauvery, Krishna-Godavari (KV) basins

Middle East: Cyprus; Iraq; Kuwait; Lebanon; Saudi Arabia; Qatar

North America: Anadarko, Big Horn, Gulf Coast, Paradox, Permian, Powder River, Williston basins; Scotian Shelf

South America: Brazil (Campos, Santos subsalt basins); Venezuela (Gulf of Paria)

Southeast Asia: Indonesia (East Java, South Sumatra, basins); Philippines; Vietnam (Cuu Long, Nam Con Son basins)

TEACHING

I will be co-teaching Carbonate Geology 731 with Shanan Peters. While working in industry, I taught numerous carbonate geology classes and led field trips to the Pleistocene and recent of the Bahamas and British West Indies, Permian of the Guadalupe Mountains, Mississippian and Pennsylvanian of the Sacramento Mountains, and the Cambrian and Cretaceous of central Texas.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES

I have enjoyed serving on and chairing several committees, as well as being program chair for conferences and research symposia for The American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), The Geological Society of London, and the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM). I have been an associate editor of the AAPG Bulletin and served as President of the Mid Continent Section of SEPM, and Secretary-Treasurer and President of the national SEPM. I have also served as Treasurer of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents and as a member and chair of the Board of Visitors for the UW Department of Geoscience.

Honors include: The Robert H. Dott, Sr. Memorial Award (Best AAPG Special Publication, 2003), SEPM Honorary Membership (2009), AAPG Distinguished Service Award (2012), Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison Department of Geoscience Distinguished Alumnus Award (2015).

I am a licensed professional geologist by the Texas Board of Professional Geologists (License 1519) and the Wyoming Board of Professional Geologists (License PG-760).
