Postdoc Position for The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht

The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites
applications for a 18-month Postdoc Position (m/f) within the project Palmod
‘Form the Last Interglacial to the Anthropocene – Modelling a Complete Glacial
Cycle’. More information about the project can be found at
https://www.palmod.de.

This new project, a large collaborative effort among many institutions across
Germany, aims at simulating the Earth’s climate over a full glacial-
interglacial cycle over the past 135 thousand years with a state-of-the art
Earth System Model and at using a comprehensive set of climate proxy records
to reconstruct the Earth’s climate over this period in the most detailed way
possible. One of the expected outcome is an evaluation of the skill of Earth
System Models to simulate climate variability at these long time scales.

The contribution of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht to the project involves
the analysis of compilations of climate proxy records with the objective of
designing statistical models to reconstruct past climate at millennial time
scales. Specifically, the tasks that should be carried out by the successful
candidate involve: the development of proxy-specific error models, the test of
statistical methods in the context of comprehensive Earth System Models
(Pseudo-Proxy Experiments), application of methods on the model data generated
in the time frame of the project, attendance and presentation of results at
workshops and conferences, and preparation of scientific publication for
international peer-reviewed journals.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht expects candidates to have completed a Ph.D.
related to the simulation and/or analysis of past climates, that can
demonstrate a profound familiarity with statistical methods used for climate
reconstructions in paleoclimatology, and that also have experience with the
processing of large data sets produced by coupled Earth System Models using
UNIX/Linux platforms and programming languages (Matlab, R, FOTRAN),
preferentially in the context of super computing environments. A good
publication record in international journals is a clear advantage.

We offer an appropriate salary related to the German public tariff (TV-AVH)
plus the usual social benefits for the public employment sector. The
Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is an equal opportunity employer for women,
minorities, and people with disabilities, and strives to increase the
percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with
equal qualifications will be considered preferentially.

Appointment will begin as soon as possible. Please send your application
indicating job offer code no. 2016/KS 1 to the e-mail-address: personal@hzg.de
and include your CV, a  statement of interests and contact details of three
references in a single pdf file. Closing date for applications is March, 16th,
2016.
