Senior Research Associate – Surface and Interface Science
The University of Chicago Center for Advanced Radiation Sources (CARS) is seeking a Senior Research Associate (SRA) to become part of the GeoSoilEnviroCARS (GSECARS) national user research facility at Sector 13 of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL).
The successful applicant for this full-time scientific position will be responsible for providing user support, originating research projects, and leading R&D efforts to expand capabilities of synchrotron beamlines in the area of mineral surfaces and interfaces.
The position requires (1) a Ph.D. in earth science, environmental science, chemistry, physics or a related field; (2) synchrotron research experience using synchrotron x-ray techniques, especially x-ray surface scattering, x-ray standing waves, crystal truncation rod and/or x-ray diffraction as well as analysis of these data; and (3) a minimum of five years of relevant experience, after receipt of the doctoral degree, applying such techniques to scientific problems in geochemistry and environmental science. Strong computer skills are also required, including EPICS, SPEC, and Python. Experience with the operation of synchrotron beamlines and knowledge of the crystal chemistry of actinides are highly preferred.
In addition to providing support for scientific users conducting research at GSECARS, the SRA will also be expected to engage in collaborative original research with GSECARS users and staff. The SRA will be responsible for developing new instrumentation for surface science experiments, as well as maintaining and improving the existing instrumentation. The individual will help to oversee the operation of the chemistry laboratory at GSECARS. The SRA must possess excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills. These skills are critical to planning workflow and supporting user groups, as well as to disseminating the work of GSECARS in peer-reviewed publications, presenting findings at national meetings, and planning and conducting workshops to train junior level personnel in surface science techniques. In addition the SRA will have the opportunity to serve in the role of Principal Investigator, writing proposals to federal and non-federal agencies to support such research and development. The ability to work well as a team member and independently is required, as is the capacity to work in an environment with strict safety regulations.
