PhD student Pablo Moreno-Yaeger was recognized this spring as an inductee of the Edward Bouchet Graduate Honor Society. The Edward Alexander Bouchet Graduate Honor Society commemorates the first African American to earn a doctorate degree from an American university (Physics, Yale University, 1876). The Bouchet Society seeks to develop a network of scholars who exemplify academic and personal excellence.
In May 2026, Dr. Moreno-Yaeger successfully defended his PhD thesis, “Impacts of ice sheet loading on magma plumbing systems: Insights from the Andean Southern Volcanic Zone,” which was completed under the guidance of Professor Brad Singer. Pablo has already published two of his thesis chapters focused on the relationship of the magmatic evolution of Mocho-Choshuenco volcano with the history of the Patagonian Ice Sheet, with the remaining two chapters in review. He served five years as an instructor of the Volcano Ice Summer Program, showcasing geoscience research to students at a community college in Portland, Oregon as well as at the Universidad de La Frontera, Chile. Pablo is known around the department for being an exceptional TA and for his numerous service roles, which include his contributions as the graduate student member of a faculty hiring committee and the faculty liaison for the Geoscience Graduate Student Association.
Congratulations, Pablo, on this well-deserved award!
